According to Susan Nelson from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at Kansas State University, dogs need exercise two times per day. Smaller dogs must have 15-20 minutes of exercise and bigger dogs must have 30-40 minutes. The accurate type and amount of exercise depends on the breed of your dog, his age and health. Type of exercise depends on your dog, but all dogs can walk. This is the simplest exercise. Also, dogs should run. Some dogs have a lot of energy, so you must provide them enough space for running. Swimming is also a good exercise, just make sure that your dog can swim, before you take him into a swimming pool.
Pet owners usually think that playing in the backyard with a dog is enough exercise, but it isn’t. All dogs need exercise beside their play time. During the warm months, you must pay attention on a temperature of your dog. If he overheat, there are possible problems. Also, do not bath your dog as soon he ends up with his exercise. You should wait an hour in order for him to cool down.
If your dog lives in an apartment, with you, you must take this seriously. In your case, a dog cannot exercise nor run. In fact, he cannot even walk. There are many health problems in this case. In order to prevent them, you must make your dog exercise. Dogs like to run and jump. Even this is better than no activity at all. But, you should make him exercise twice a day. It will need you about an hour, but your dog will be happier and healthier.
