Till Death Do Us Part Your Marriage to Your Macaw

Till Death Do Us Part Your Marriage to Your Macaw

When you get a Macaw, whether you realize it or not, you’ve just entered into what is in the Macaws opinion a marriage. You have just committed to that old phrase ’till death do us part,’ because in most cases, your Macaw will outlive you, providing that you obtained the Macaw as a baby, when you were an adult.

There is more to the old marriage jokes about Macaws and their owners than the lifespan of the Macaw, however. You see, in the wild, Macaws choose a mate, and then mate for life. They are very protective of their mates, and during the breeding season, they will even put on a courting show for their mate.

While the Macaws in the wild actually have a selection when it comes to mates, Macaws kept in captivity do not. If there is a Macaw of the opposite sex, in the same household, that Macaw will most likely become the birds mate. However, the bird might also see another potential mate?in you.

Macaws typically bond very closely with one individual living in the household, and they do view and treat that person as their mate for life. This, of course, could become a problem, depending on just how much the bird has bonded with you, and how much time and attention you can give him as well as how much time and attention you must give to other people or pets in the household.

Often, a male Macaw will take his mating duties quite seriously. He will prepare a nest for you although you may not fit in it. He will regurgitate food for you. He will even flirt with you. When others bestow affection on your, or threaten you, he will come either to defend that which he feels belongs to him, or to protect you.

As with any human marriage, the marriage that you have with your Macaw will see its ups and downs. There will be an adjustment period, where you get used to living with each other, and learn how to interact with each other hopefully in a positive way. There will be good times when your Macaw entertains you and you entertain him. There will be bad times when you just cannot agree, and he lets you know that he does not agree in a very loud tone of screech.

Make no mistake about it. When you get a Macaw, you are entering into the sacred bonds of marriage whether you like it or not, whether you are married or not, and even though you may not be married to a human at the moment, should you eventually become married to a human, you will still be married to that blasted bird that you adore so much.

In the grand scheme of things, when it comes to our own human marriages, we could learn a thing or two from our Macaws. They will stick it out through thick and thin for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer until death do you part.

why does my macaw parrot peck on everyone?

I got a 8 year old Macaw parrot from a friend last week, and he started pecking me with the bridge of his beak almost immediately. Now we are noticing him doing it to other ppl. He doesn’t seem to be trying to hurt anyone when he does this.

Answer
For one thing, everyone is new to him. What kind of macaw is it?? Some macaws are known for this behavior, especially the scarlet and the military. Don’t hurt him if he does this, just put him back on the cage. If he starts screaming or squawking for attention or whatever, just do not pay attention to him. Don’t even look at him. He will do it for attention and to get a reaction from you. They can be little stinkers and very loud. Since you just got him, hopefully you can nip bad behavior in the bud. Remember that birds need 10 to 12 hours of sleep every night. Put his cage ( or another smaller cage for sleep) in a darkened room with the cage covered and no noise. Not getting enough sleep is a big cause of bad behavior, but most owners don’t know birds need sleep just like we do. I hope I helped some Have fun with the new member of your family.

Eclectus Parrot Common Behavior Problems

Electus ParrotEclectus parrot are very special birds, and to many owners, they are often like small children. They definitely each have their own personalities, but they also have two growing stages that can be quite trying. These growing stages are similar to a human child’s terrible twos and puberty. Here is a breakdown of both of these growing stages.

The Terrible Twos The terrible twos for Eclectus parrots occurs between the ages of three and five months. It is during this time that they are generally naughty and into everything. They will essentially test the boundaries set by the breeder, the owner, or their actual parent. It is during this time that the young Eclectus parrot needs to learn who is boss (you).

It is very vital to your bird’s future behavior that you do not tolerate his bad behavior during the terrible twos. For example, you must make him do what it is that you want him to do, instead of allowing him to do what he wants to do during training sessions. This does not mean, however, that he should be punished. Essentially, you need to show him that you are dominant. During this period, experts advise that you should not let the bird sit on your shoulder, as this puts him above your eye level, which in his world means that he is dominant.

Puberty When your Eclectus parrot is about nine months old, he will start going through what is essentially puberty. Just as human teenagers have raging emotions, these birds also have raging emotions, and they look for a way to deal with them. This stage, unfortunately, can last until the bird is about two or three years old.

Of the two growing stages, this one is often the hardest for the owner to deal with, because it lasts the longest. The good news is that unless your Eclectus parrot has been demonstrating poor behavior before this period, he will grow out of it, just as most teenagers do. During this time, you may notice extreme mood swings, screaming that takes place more often, shadow boxing, and even masturbation. It is also during this time, of course, that the Eclectus parrot will start showing obvious interest in the opposite sex.

The key to getting through both of these trying times is patience just as though you were dealing with a human child. However, discipline really isn’t suggested, since the Eclectus parrot won’t understand it. Instead, encourage more appropriate behavior, and understand that your beloved bird will outgrow these awkward stages, and he will become the bird that you’ve grown to love once again.

What are the differences between Zebra and Society Finches?

I’m trying to decide between zebra or society finches, what are the differences? Do they sing differently? Do males need to be kept seperate.

Answer
Zebra finches make a lot of little chirps, where as Society finches are very quiet on average. Both come in different colors and patterns, and are easy to care for.

Zebra finches breed easily, and can get out of hand. Whereas Society Finches like to be Nannies(they sit on any egg from just about anything, great for hard to breed/raise finches).

Male Zebra finches should all have one female finch. Otherwise the females tend to get harassed. I would probably do the same for Society finches (good luck telling them apart though).

I can’t think of anything else at the moment.

Finches Are The Very Best Pet Birds

Finches Are The Very Best Pet Birds

Finches
It is recommended to attach some aviary mesh on the inside of the nest box under the entrance hole, this will help as a ladder instead than the father or mother bird jumping onto the eggs or chicks but they never have such a factor in the wild so it’s not absolutely needed.Budgerigars (budgies, parakeets) will involve a box of about nine inch (22.5 cm) long, 6 inch (15 cm) vast, 6 inch (15 cm) deep with an entrance hole approximately 2 inch (five cm) in diameter on the front top corner. An upright nest box of comparable dimensions also works very well but the horizontal kind look to be the most preferred. Once more you will have to have a removable lid or a doorway for inspection and cleaning functions, a perch below the entrance hole, and if utilizing an upright nest box some wire mesh on the inside beneath the entrance hole will aid for the exact cause as the cockatiel box previously mentioned, but yet again not vital.Smaller finches such as zebra and Bengalese (society) will want a nest box that is about five inch (twelve.5 cm) in all dimensions with the front slightly more compact in height by about one-1?inch (two.five-three.75 cm) to depart an entrance opening at the best front, you can have a perch beneath the entrance if you like but it is not essential. Finches will also typically take to a little semi-open wicker basket.Just before placing out your nest boxes you should inspect each and every a single meticulously for any indicators of have on or rot, and if essential repair or switch them. Also make positive your nest boxes are hygienically clean, so give them a scrub if desired with a mild disinfectant remedy, then rinse them carefully and make it possible for them to dry entirely ahead of using them.Place your nest boxes as large up as doable, after all birds normally nest in trees so like to nest superior up. Be positive to fix all your nest boxes at the very same height or else your birds will squabble above the greatest placement. If you have a mixed aviary make guaranteed you do not combine distinctive varieties of nest boxes in the similar site. By this I signify split your aviary into areas, no barriers necessary, an place for cockatiel boxes, an separate spot for budgerigar boxes, and a separate spot for finch boxes or baskets. If you have nest boxes for different species in also near a proximity this may perhaps result in territorial disputes amongst unique species and can result in destroyed eggs, or chicks obtaining attacked.

Unless you are breeding for the exhibit bench, for which a absolutely diverse technique is expected, it is greatest to allow your birds decide on their unique mates and nesting boxes.

Whilst they are breeding and raising youthful you have to be selected to provide your birds with a continual foods and refreshing water source, immediately after all they will need to have all the electricity they can get. Also consider not to allow your birds raise a lot more than 2 clutches per year, three at the most as the moment they have finished they will want to assemble up their power and unwanted fat reserves to get via winter months, so be sure to eliminate the nest boxes in the autumn (fall) when they have done.

Cages for Finches What You Must Know

Cages for Finches What You Must Know

Finches
When it comes to setting up cages for finches, there are many different ways that you can go about it. Birds are essentially winged creatures, meaning they are born to fly. Since you are planning to keep finches as pets, you should at least give them a cage large enough for them to fly and move around.
Protection from Extreme Temperatures

Finches are quite sensitive to heat, and it is important that you avoid exposing them to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Transporting the birds to a buyer or from a pet shop can be detrimental to their health. If you are taking the bird?s home using a pick-up truck, make sure that they do not get in contact with overheated cargo bed that gets direct exposure to sunlight. You may want to consider welded mesh as cages for finches when transporting the birds quite often. The birds must also have constant supply of food and water. Secure the cage so that it does not wobble heavily and compromise the safety of your birds.During wintertime, the cages for finches must have protection against the chilling wind that can freeze the birds to death. You can use towel to cover the cage and provide warmth to your pets. If you are traveling short distances, you can use paper sacks taped around the cage. But make sure that they are not kept in the dark for long hours as this can disorient the birds.
Choosing the Cage

The rule of the thumb is: the bigger, the better. The cages should serve as a healthy sanctuary where they can fly about without difficulty. Welded wire is preferable because it is quite sturdy and can support several cages that are stacked on top of each other. Vertical cages for finches are better than horizontal ones because they allow the birds to fly up and down. Avoid putting flat perches because the finches can have difficulty sitting on them. Natural wood is the best kind of perch, with a diameter of about 5/8 inch. Put several perches inside the cage so that the birds can rest on them when needed.

When setting the cage, design a two-inch lip up on the sides that would catch seed hulls falling out. You can place the cage in a cardboard box that is firmly glued to the bottom. Cages for finches should have a water bath where the birds can dip into when they’re feeling hot and greasy. Make sure that the water bath does not easily trip over. If the cage is set up properly, you will only have to clean it once a month.

Nesting is an essential part of cages for finches, especially if it’s the season for breeding. There is variety of materials that you can use for putting up a nest. You can use cardboard boxes glued together to resemble a circular nest. Put vertical sides around it so that the hatchlings won?t fall over accidentally. The most common material is burlap sacking, which you can just allow the birds to tear off the strands and assemble it themselves. Dry pine needles also make an excellent nesting as opposed to grass, which are most often overlooked by birds.

Red Macaw

Macaws with Attitudes

macawMacaws are not only beautiful; they are also naturally sweet birds.

They are very attentive, very interested in you, and very loving. This doesn’t mean that there won’t come a point in time when you find yourself with a Macaw with an attitude problem, and attitude problems must be nipped in the bud quickly.

Behavior that humans frequently find unacceptable includes biting, lunging, obnoxious noise, chewing, and even regurgitation. Some of these things are normal, do not portray a bad attitude, and cannot be stopped.

Regurgitation, for instance, is normal. A Macaw regurgitates for his mate and if he considers you to be his mate, he will regurgitate for you. You can try to discourage regurgitation but you can’t stop it altogether, and you certainly cannot punish a bird for doing what comes naturally to him.

Another normal behavior is chewing. Chewing is important to Macaws, because it keeps their beak in good shape, but they also chew out of boredom, and of course out of curiosity. If your Macaw is chewing your furniture and other belongings, it isn’t because he has a bad attitude. It is because you are not providing enough suitable chewing alternatives for him.

Noise is another natural behavior, but it can also signal an attitude problem. Like small children, Macaws like lots of attention and if they don’t get what they want, they will get loud. On the other hand, they get loud for other reasons as well. Screeching and screaming is natural for them, because in the wild, this is how they communicate with each other. Even if you give the Macaw negative attention (you scream back), this will only cause him to get louder more often because it got him what he wanted?attention.

Lunging and biting are the two attitude issues that you must address quickly. First, a Macaw often lunges at new people in an effort to test the boundaries with that person. It is important that the person not back down. If you or someone else ‘backs down,’ you will lose the birds respect, and he will know that he is the puppet master?he is running the show, and can get his way by ‘threatening’ you with a lunge. However, not all lunging is bad. Once you’ve earned your Macaws respect, and you know each other well, when he is playing with you, he may very well ‘playfully’ lunge at you, but he means no harm.

Biting is almost always a sign of an attitude problem. You must first figure out what the bird’s problem is, because if he is naturally friendly and loving, sudden biting means one of three things: either the bird is being handled wrong, something isn’t right in his world, or he is ill.

Finally, just as humans have bad days from time to time, Macaws can also have bad days. Just make sure that your Macaws bad attitude doesn’t become a bad habit for him.

how much does a macaw parrot cost please?

in uk, so no dollars please.

Answer
Well in America, a macaw costs from around $800 dollars to $2,500 dollars, so that’s about 520-1,620 for you. However, I’m not sure if it costs any more than it does in American than it does in the UK, so…

I’m guessing the cost is the same however.

Hope this helped!

Macaws Living in the Wild

Macaws Living in the Wild

Macaws Depending on where you live in the world, the chances are good that you may never see a Macaw in the wild. Unfortunately, the chances are good that even if you live where Macaws are located in the wild, you may not see them around for much longer.

Macaws are indigenous to the tropical areas of Central America, and South America. They can also be found in various Rain Forests, in tropical climates. Unlike many other types of birds, Macaws do not migrate. When they change locations, it is typically in search of food, and not warmth.

In the wild, they travel in packs, known as flocks. They carefully choose their mates within the flock, and they mate for life. The make their homes in holes, usually inside of tree trunks, and they do this for a good reason.

In most tropical settings, there is a time of the year known as the wet season. At the end of this wet season, a great deal of fruit and plants are available. The holes that the Macaws live in not only provide shelter from the wet season for the adult birds, but also for the eggs that will be laid at the beginning of the wet season in anticipation of the fruit and plants that will be available to feed the hatchlings at the end of the wet season.

When the wet season occurs depends on which side of the equator the area is on. During this time, the female will lay anywhere from two to four eggs, and the incubation period is 28 days. Hatchlings stay with their parents for the entire first year of their lives. Unfortunately, may don’t survive that first year. It is believed that less than 10% of hatchlings survive to adulthood.

Macaws feed on seeds, various foliage, fruits, nuts and insects in the wild. They generally search for food during the early morning hours and the early evening hours, before dark. Their least active periods are the hottest parts of the day and of course the nighttime hours.

Even though they have no natural enemies, and they are rarely prey for other animals, they do have a couple of ‘unnatural’ enemies. The first enemy is poachers, who commonly either kill the Macaws for their feathers, or capture them for the black market. The survival of these birds is also threatened by human progress, when tropical lands are cleared for farmland and structures.

In fact, because of these things, and their slower breeding practices, most Macaws are now on the endangered species list. Sadly, six species of birds have already become extinct, and a seventh species is suspected of being extinct.

There was a point in time when wild Macaws commonly lived longer than captive ones which usually between 100 and 150 years. Today, that is no longer the case, and it is believed that wild Macaws only live forty to fifty years at best.

Nail Clipping Tips for Eclectus Parrots

Nail Clipping Tips for Eclectus Parrots

Eclectus Parrots

Eclectus parrots nails’ needs to clipped about every six months. This is important for your health and his, and for the health of your furnishings. Those nails can get very sharp and very dangerous.

This really is something that you can do yourself. Just make sure that you are prepared with the right tools. You need Kwik Stop, in case the nail bleeds. You also need a good thick towel, and a good pair of cat nail clippers. Do not attempt to clip your bird’s nails without having Kwik Stop, or some other styptic powder. Even just cutting into the quick of the nail, and causing that nail to bleed, can easily and quickly lead to your Eclectus parrot bleeding to death.

You will be nervous the first few time that you do this, and your Eclectus parrot will pick up on that. You are about to find a good use for that thick towel. You need to wrap the bird in the towel in a way that leave his head exposed, but his wings held against his body. Also make sure that there is enough material to prevent him from biting your hand as you clip his nails.

It is important that you understand that just as you don’t feel pain when your nails are clipped, this task doesn’t hurt your Eclectus parrot either unless you cut too far, and hit the quick. If you’ve ever cut your nail too short, you know how painful this can be. You want to make sure that the bird cannot move as you clip. Understand that he is nervous and that he doesn’t like this but know that you aren’t hurting him. This should help you relax a bit.

The only part of the nail that you need to clip is the sharp point on the end. Again, you don’t want to cause your bird pain by cutting down into the quick, and this is easily avoided by just cutting off the sharp tip of the nail.

While you are clipping your Eclectus parrots nails, make sure that you are talking calmly to him. He knows the sound of your voice well, and this will comfort and calm him, making your job easier.

Make sure that you work as fast as you can, while being safe. Don’t get in such a hurry that you hurt the bird. If you are a bit slow in the beginning, don’t worry. As time moves on, and you become more experienced at nail clipping, you will be able to do it very quickly, causing the Eclectus parrot less stress and anxiety. Get those nails clipped, and let him go.

Once you are finished clipping your Eclectus parrots nails, you can expect him to pout a bit. He may not want much to do with you for a while. Give him time to sooth his ruffled feathers and it won’t be long before he is perched on your shoulder once again with nicely trimmed nails.
